Indelible
Someone would not see the day
when you were forgotten
in Scotland.
Built of dark stone, old stone.
corners crudely rounded by time
patches of green growth, white lichen.
rising out of the earth, monumental.

Someone cared about you
to construct this cairn, to set a cross
above the place where a convicted witch
was murdered in the name of god.

You should have disappeared that day
your name left out
among records of the cost of peat
but your name appearing in white
for hundreds of years
washed away, it appears again
indelible Margaret.

Someone cared about you
to construct this cairn, to set a cross
above the place where a convicted witch
was roped to the pyre.
Someone knew you
knew your laugh.
someone watched your body
turning to ash.
